Career Discovery Coaching
Starting a career, returning to work or changing careers is a daunting experience for even the most confident of us. This programme helps you to break down what you love, what you are good at, where you can provide value and how to achieve it.
-
Every career coaching assignment is personalised, but most often we will follow this structure:
• Self-discovery (individual audit)
• Identifying a career including exploring and comparing different careers
• Identifying the personal development required to pursue your chosen career
• Self-belief and confidence development
• Creating a Career Action Plan stating the step-by-step process you need take to move forward with your chosen career
• Identifying obstacles and how to overcome them
• Identifying how to stay motivated long-term
• Developing processes that support consistent action and help you to take ownership of results
-
Everyone is different. At the start of our time together we will explore what makes you, you. We will review your past – your academic qualifications as well as your work and life experiences. Following this we will reflect on where you are now, your dreams and aspirations and how your past can inform your future.
This stage will likely include identifying and exploring:
• Personal and professional achievements
• Natural and professional strengths
• Work and life values (including key motivational drivers)
• Work-related skills and favourite skills
• Preferred working organisation and environment
• Personality style (and how that fits into different environments)
• Your purpose or perhaps a theme that runs through your past experiences
• Role models
• How other areas of your life have an impact on your career decisions
• Preferred future lifestyle
• Authentic Self
This initial exploration will help you in understanding what kind of careers and organisations align most closely with who you are. Likewise, it will help you to answer tough interview questions confidently by framing your answers with what excites and engages you.
-
Based on the Self-discovery stage, we will analyse several different career choices that seem suitable by aligning them with your Career Sweet Spot*, your preferred lifestyle and the market prospects for each industry. This is followed by exploring your top career choices in more detail. We will then compare the shortlisted careers and explore into the practicalities of following through on each choice. Based on this exploration, you will most likely choose one career or career direction to move forward with.
*The Career Sweet Spot is the ideal combination of what you love, what you are good at and how you can bring value to others. The key benefit of this combination is that it shows you where you will have most impact with least effort. (This concept originates from the Hedgehog Concept developed by Jim Collins.)
-
We will identify how you need to personally develop to move into your chosen career. Based on what you have discovered about yourself and your chosen career we will isolate gaps in your skillset and work out how these can be developed.
-
Creating an action plan for your chosen career includes identifying the activities that need to be taken outside of the session to make your plans a reality. For change to be successful, consistent action is needed.
In this stage we will plan a step-by-step route to that change. We will also allocate significant time to identify what may stop you from following through, how to overcome challenges and how you can take ownership of results.
Based on this, we will then develop the processes that you need to put in place in order to take consistent action.
